Weaning

Hi everyone,

My son is 4months old and I decided to introduce baby rice as his evening feed/meal. I have been giving it to him at about 5pm for four days now and the problem seems to be really bad/painful trapped wind! Im not sure if it is just a coincidence that the trapped wind has shown its face at the same time as starting him on solids, but about 2 hours after his baby rice he screams and screams, raising his legs up. this goes on into the night, meaning he wakes up every 2 hours in alot of pain. I would just like to point out that I am awear of health visitors advising to not start weaning until 6months but I was weaned at 3months and I know this "recomendation" is fairly new (just like the way to let babies sleep etc it is always changing!!) babie's used to be weaned from 3months plus and personally I dont understand what is different about these 2000 babies to us!?!?! Anyway I just wondered if anyone's baby suffered the same as mine? I have decided to leave the weaning for a couple of weeks and see if his trapped wind settles down or not. perhaps his digestive system has not yet matured enough for solids? Any advice on this would be very much apriciated! Thanks Jade

Hiya, for one , i never listened to the health visitor when she told me off for weaning my boy at 11 weeks, and he is two now and is fine and likes a variety of food. my little girl on the other hand i started her at 11 weeks and she as the same problem as your son because her stomach cant handle thhe food, you could either try giving him less than what your giving him or as you say try again in a few weeks ....he may just be finding it hard to digest....its rare that i listened to health visitors because each baby is different so dont worry what they say lol =]....hope it helped

hi. i think your right to think his tummy is not ready for solids. it seems to be upsetting him. i weaned my first at 4 + 1/2mths using baby rice with breast milk as she was feeding on me every half hour and it was getting a bit ridiculous!!. she started with only a spoon at lunch. my 2nd i didn't give solids untill she was 6 + 1/2mths so each one is different. my eldest is now 6yrs and even back then the recommended age for weaning was 6mths. one of the things they have found is what you have said, that there small tummys/guts are not quite developed enough, maybe some are as they grow at different stages but your having problems so i'd wait as long as i could. another reason hv recommend later is due to all the diets we now have found people to be suffering from, gluten and such, same as everything some will grow up needing special diets others wont but they think it's all about what they eat while weaning and how early they start that effects them.

if you find in a few weeks he's still not satisfied from milk alone and you give it another go you could try just at lunch so he's more active and has time to work it off his tum, maybe avoiding tummy ache so he's not sleeping on it. but it could also be the rice and not solids that's upsetting him, if you get what i mean! my 2nd didn't take to rice, just a thought. you could try the baby cereal.

Hi i'm just wondering what's the rush.  I would stop giving him food until he is 6 months especially as it is causing such discomfort.  I agree with you things do change but both weaning at 6 months and the back to sleep campaign are backed up with very good reasons to do just that.

I agree with lindsey. No rush to start weaning at all unless it's for health reaons like helping reflux etc.
