Baby's growth

Hi girls.  This may seem like a silly thing and is quite hard to explain, but I'm wondering if anyone can help.  My 8 week old likes to lean her head over on her right shoulder and look right.  She can't seem to turn her head the other way and her body curves a little because of it.  She can straighten her body and lift her head when on her tummy, but we can't get her to turn to her left or look left.  When we lie her down on her back, she naturally looks right and her body will naturally curve to the side.  My worry is that she won't deveelop her neck muscles properly and will have problems with her spine later on.  Is this normal?  Am I over reacting?  People say that this was prbably the position that she was in when shewas in the womb, but I would've thought that her body would've straightened out by now.

hi

im in the same position as you my little boy is only 5 weeks and his body also curves but i noticed that his tummy seems to pop out on one side to , my little boy will not turn his head either only when on your shoulder, have you noticed that your childs head is flat on the side they always lie on to as my little boys is and im rather worried about that., im hoping this will correct itself

go see your gp to see if she has a problem with one of her neck muscles, it may be tight (torticollis) if so she will need referral to paediatric physio.

i have posted some advice on helen021's post about flat heads you may find helpful

also should have put on there that giving them encouragement to turn their head in the opposite directio to the way they favour is good. so talk to them/show them toys/have music/tv on that side so they are more likely to turn their heads

My little boy is 15 weeks but only looked one way for along time, he never even layed looking up he only ever looked right and his body would curve that way. He suddenly moved his head when asleep one night and now varies all the time.

I was worried but he just suddenly did it a few weeks ago and now is fine! Nothing i did would encourage him to turn, he just did it when he was ready.

Don't worry!

Hi. This is definetly something I would get checked out.  My little one was only looking one way and would twist his body round to see something particularly interesting rather than turn his head to the right. He was still doing this when I went  to his 8 week check (when he was 13 weeks old!). I mentioned it to the GP and he said it was a torn sternum mastoid due to being delivered so quickly. I didnt think any more of it as he said it would heal itself. I mentioned it when I was on a baby massage course to the nursery nurse who was horrified and referred me to the physio straight away. They have confirmed that it is torte collis ( twisted neck). He has had a lot of physio, and is now turning beautifully both ways. The only problem is his development is delayed, he is 8 months and is  only beginning to roll over and play on his side and his head has gone flat on one side.  The prognosis is good as he is under 1 year and they say he will catch up over the next couple of months and his head should fill out a bit.   If you are in the least bit worried dont leave it - ask and keep asking till your happy.
