Iron intake

My daughter is 9 months old and I'm still breastfeeding. I'm concerned about her iron intake as I have read this can effect her immune system. She has had 8 colds is as many months. She won't eat many of the iron rich foods either. Can you help me find a way of making sure her iron levels are sufficient?

hi. google; kellymom iron. click on it. they seem to think your baby's fine. hope you find it helps. they says breast is the best way for them to get iron.

their immunes are really low and they do have to get ill to build immune protection up.

They say after 6 months, iron levels are lower in breastmilk so baby will need iron-rich foods.

Heinz do a 'mums own' brand of jars which contain added iron. Eggs, beans, wholegrains, red meat (especially liver), green leafy veg, fortified cereals are good too.

There is a supplement you can get which has iron in it too, its called wellkid baby and is made by vitabiotics, its about £5/6 on their online shop, not sure about in store. Most boots stores sell it.

Saima811, if you're worried you could try the supplement mentioned above, if youre daughter has had a cold sometimes it can take weeks to go back to normal. My daughter when she was ill would only eat purees and it took a month to go completely back to normal. To get her interested you could let her try feed herself maybe give her a spoon or finger food. My daughter was more co-operative when given a spoon as she felt in control. Maybe see if she'll eat your food? Its all the more tempting when it comes off mummys plate! try not to get too stressed, i know how worrying it can be but just keep trying, and eventually she will go back to normal. Is she teething at all? apparently that can put some babies of their food.

Hope this all helps! :)
