Baby's last name

Went to the first parenting class last night with my fiancee, she kept quiet mostly. I asked the Midwife if my last name would be put on  the wristband and she said that it wouldn't only if we were married. So my fiancee's last name would be on it. Quite upset at that because we plan on keeping it as a memory so when the child is old enough and asks questions we have something to say without any confusion. Ok we have 21 days after the birth to change it when we register the baby's name. Maybe I'm just being just a bit picky about the name thing. I just want as much involvement as I can seeing I feel very left out!

The reason they will use the mothers name is so the baby and mother both match up,they also have a unique no. on the tags. I asked about this when i had my first baby as like you my partner felt the same , but the midwife said there are that many babies it just makes it that bit easier to recognise and put baby with mum. i would'nt let it get to you trust me when you see your baby the tag will be the last thing on your mind and the tag will still hold amazing memories everytime you look at it .

Thank you very much for your reply. Only 12 weeks to go, so excited. My 1st child and I'm chomping at the bit to meet him/her.

Thanks for the post.  I hadnt considered the name band. We had persumed it would say the name of the child. I will have to let my boyfriend know because we agreed the baby would have his surname. Hope it doesnt upset him too much, hes been really understanding so far.

Good luck Rob not long left : )

Hi, had my first baby when me and my partner were engaged and the babies name badge just read "baby of" and had my maiden name. Even though we named her the minute she was out. This has no effect on what you name the baby though as you have to go your local register office after the baby has been born to name it.

we've still kept the name tag too as think it is a nice reminder also i think it is a nice story to tell her, as it means that she actually got to be at mummy and daddy's wedding too (even though she won't remember being there as she was only 9 months old)

Our next baby is due in 2 days and i'm assuming that this one will be "labled" "baby of" and have my married name as we are married now.
