Go go gadget

Who says baby shopping is all about cute little outfits and cuddly toys? Becoming a dad opens up a whole other world of gadgets. Here’s our pick of the kit…

Prams and pushchairs

It’s not just about the colour; with disc brakes, handling, suspension, off-roaders and alloys you’d be forgiven for thinking we were talking about cars here. This is one piece of equipment you need to lay a claim on picking.

Baby monitors

Or should that be walkie talkies - ‘You've got a smokey on your tail… 10-4… over…’. These things come from your basic listening device to the all signing and dancing video monitor with room temperature guide. Only the budget can hold you back.

Baby care timer

For all those sleep deprived parents who have little idea what day it is, this one’s for you. Developed in the States, this machine keeps track of when baby last fed, slept and had a change all at the touch of a button, with optional alarms to keep you on your toes. This has to be the extreme baby gadget, surely?

DIY dad

If flat packed furniture’s your thing, you could be in for quite a treat. Cots, wardrobes, changing tables – even the pram can arrive unassembled. Strap on your toolbelt and get building.

With remote-controlled mobiles, wipes warmers, digital thermometers and electronic movement mats, there’s plenty out there to boggle the mind. There’s even such a thing as a cry analyzer – a machine that tells you why your baby’s crying. Unfortunately, no gadget has yet been invented for changing the baby’s nappy – gap in the market?
