What age do I replace nighttime milk with water??

Hi guys, my little man is 17 weeks, he was waking alot in the night recently but as he is on the comfort milk as he gets constipated I couldnt start him on the hungry baby milk so I decided to wean him. He eats a small amount of baby porridge for breakfast (tried rice and he hated it) then small amount of puree at lunch and some puree with porrige around 6.30pm. He will also have 4 6oz bottles and a little water in the day. He goes to sleep around 9pm and then wakes between 3 to 5 am. I have tried a dummy/water to no avail so we give him a 6oz bottle which he gulps down. Then back to sleep until about 7.45. Now, I my mum has said to just feed him the bottle until he doesnt wake for it anymore, but my friends say he doesnt need it and persevere with the dummy/water until he goes off. Any of you experienced mumies got nay advice? thanks

hey hun, i dont see what the problem is????  he likes to have a bottle of milk for comfort and it helps him sleep, why give it up??? if its not broke dont fix it???

who has the problem with the night feed , you?? or are you just wanting to cut it out coz someone says you should?? there is nothing wrong with your lil man wanting a bottle of milk in the night for comfort it def wont do him any harm and it  wont effect your weaning, you lil man is still very young and night feeds are still quite normal for his age. id say stick with it. my lil man is 18 months old and he still take a beaker of  cows milk to bed with him and if he wakes in the night he'll have a lil drink and go back off, i wont be taking that away from him until he wants to give it up.

take care xx

Hi, I kind of disagree I feel 3 meals a day plus a bottle during the night is alot for this age. How is his weight? I would get your health visitors advice on this one, if he is weighing fine then maybe it is ok as all babies are different. I just know my little girl who was born at 9lb 6oz started on solids at 17 weeks but only at breakfast to start with for a couple of weeks then I introduced veg etc at meals.  She slept through from around 8 weeks so no milk during the night. hi. i would stick with the night feed, he's probably hungrey at this age, i imagine althought he's having 3 meals it's only a small amount so he's probably not full enough through the night. start weaning him off night feed at 6mths, thats when they start waking through habit/comfort and start normally to wake more often for milk. but you shouldn't simply give water instead, wean him off, half an ounce less each night until he gets to his last half ounce feed, that'l be his last night feed,(alot of fathing i know but worth it) the next night if he wakes stick to water but you have to not give in and go back to milk! he'll get used to it at that age and except it better than trying to struggle with him now when he's not ready. after that he should start to sleep better again. don't listen to anyone, your child is very different to your friends, they don't know your child, you'll know best when the time comes.
