Can anyone help me please?

Can anyone out there please help me?  My daughter is almost 5 months old now and just been diagnosed with reflux.  She's had a problem gaining weight from birth. I've stressed from the start that my daughters feeding was not right and health visitors are useless to the point that she was rushed into hospital after I was unable to wake her for a  feed, after they said she was just tired.  Please if anyone out there knows if you can change your health visiting team? Or can give me any tips on coping with a child with reflux? Please post I'm at my wits end.  She's been given gaviscon for infants from my GP.  Hayley Jennifer-May.

Hi Hayley, I've had this problem with all three of mine, the youngest being 3 months. My first used to have trouble feeding and spit milk out and cry while feeding, they prescribed gaviscon and this worked but he didn't put weight on too well until about 6-7 months. My second used to throw nearly all his milk back up, gaviscon didn't work and after lots of trips to docs I managed to get him refered where the prescribed ranitidine which helped lots but by this time his weight had gone down lots (he was a healthy 9lb 15 at birth) but dropped down the centiles while he was suffering. Now with my daughted who is 3 months she started crying through her feeds at about 4 weeks, one doc wouldn't give me gaviscon so I waited to see another one who did give it me (i told her i recognized the signs and didn't want to leave it) . She was still suffering but because she was thriving ( 9lb 7 at birth and now weighs 19lb 6 at 13 weeks) they wouldn't refer her, I told them they were being cruel and that cos she was putting on weight doesn't mean she isn't suffering. anyway I increase the does of gaviscon to two saches on my own (mum knows best) and she is fine now, its one dose for about 4oz and 2 for 8oz, she was drinking about 6 or 7 so I put 2 in 8oz, I ended thowing alot away but it doesn't matter now cos she is ok ( i told my doc when I went back that I had increased the dose and she said well done, lol). keep pushing for a referal if the gaviscon doesn't work.

Hope you go ok and if you have any questions please get back to me. x

Thanks so much for getting back to me.  Well Jennifer is taking her gaviscon but not feeding very well had the health visitor this morning to observe her feeding.  ( I let the health visitor feed her so she got a feel for her discomfort.)  Jennifer-May gave her hell (you go girl) .  Still waiting to hear from peads consultant but so far all she does is puke the gaviscon back but not her milk so a step in the right direction. As for her weight she was 7lb at birth and now weighs in at 11lb 10 she put just 2oz on in 2 weeks.  I guess I just got to wait and see.  Hayley and Jennifer-May.

Hi again, I really do feel for you I know how bad it is, all the health professionals see things like this everyday and don't really have much sympathy they just say yes it will pass. I just wondered if you were breast or bottle feeding, as I find putting the gaviscon in the bottles better, I tried to give it first and it didn't seem to work. Also are you weaning yet, cos I started giving my middle one rusk ( I know - shock horror, don't give rusk etc) at 3 months and it really helped keep the milk down, so maybe it's worth a try. Also when I saw a consultant they first prescribed cemetidine (it's cheaper) but this gave him the runs quite bad so they changed to ranitidine so just bear that in mind. Also if you are bottle feeding try putting 2 sachets in if she is feeding more than 6 oz as like I said earlier it really made the difference in a day or two.

I hope you get something sorted soon. Kerry X

Hi there and a big thank-you for your continued support on this.  Jennifer was breastfed up until 2 months or so when my supple dropped after taking some medication which reallly up set her system.  She's now taking a 5oz bottle every 2hrs as she can not tolerate anything larger as she is so small for her age.  I've been told to give her 2 sachets in 15mls of water after every feed which when I can get her to take it really seems to be helping.  I can't even try to ween her as her digestive system is so immature due to her size.  The consultant wants her weighed every week in baby clinic to track her weight gain if it gets any worse then he'll see her at the hospital.  Just have to play the waiting game.  Thanks and keep you informed Hayley and Jennifer-May.
