8 month old can't handle lumpier food/stage 2 jars

I have tried moving my 8 month old from pureed food to lumpier/stage 2 jars (which are from 7 months) but he chokes on it after the first mouthful! I spoke to my health visitor about it and she said that I HAVE to move him onto it now. I'm very worried about him choking, once he went blue in the face and I nearly called for an ambulance. Has anyone else had this problem or got any advice? Thanks!

I used to be the room leader in a baby room in a private nursery, i recently left to have a baby of my own, one thing we found to enourage babies to try lumpier food was to give them a little bit of the pureed food and mix in a little bit of the stage 2 food, if that fails then try making your own food and just mash it up so it has very small lumps as he gets used to the small lumps mash it less so the lumps are bigger, and keep a drink of water next to you to wash down any bits he might be struggling with. good luck

Hi, if your little one is good with his hands why not try finger foods instead of lumps, that way he's in control.  A gag reflex is normal when they are learning, its all about them learning to manouever the food around their mouth with their tongue.  Good luck. x

That is the whole reason I am doing Baby Led Weaning this time round.

We're going to do Baby Led Weaning here. No slops, purees or mush for us, too time consuming making all that up, ice cubes etc. Been there done that with my daughter she would never eat jars either and is a fusspot who wouldn't try anthing new. It'll be proper table food from start for my wee man, he is 19 weeks today and exclusively breast fed, so not started yet but he'll be eating at the table with us. It'll be him on finger foods and self feeding from the start , he will be able eat anything and everything he can get in his mouth. Gill Rapley book is a must have for Baby Led Weaning.

Not too sure if its too late for you to try it.

Lisa x round.

We do BLW too, Thomas is 7 months and loving it- no purees, just proper food, he loves steak, fruit veg, not turned his nose up at anything and is pretty good at feeding himself with a spoon too!  Definately recommend the Gill Rapley book if you are thinking about it, I don't think it's too late to swap to it...
