Car parking at work

I have recently told my boss I am pregnant. I decided to tell them early so they would have time to plan etc. My boss has been fantastic and has kept it confidential. We have a car park at work and spaces are supposed to be rotated on a six month basis. Since I started over a year ago this has never happened and I have been stuck in an extra car park the company has a half hour walk away. My boss (without me asking and keeping the fact that it is me annonymous) spoke to our facilities manager about requesting car parking for me on site once I am five months pregnant, which was really nice of her. However the facilities manager has refused the request and has siad that it is my own choice to be pregnant and I can therefore not be considered to have a need to park on site. It;s fine now, but an hour a day of walking and crossing busy roads (and one of the roads I cross is a motorway slip lane!) at seven or eight months pregnant doesn't sound to appealing. Does anyone know if work has to give me carparking? Would appreciate a response as I have goggled this subject and can't find a thing. Thanks, Lissa x

hi. i can only think you can ask for a risk assesment at work. if your car park is a work car park it should be taken into account. yes, it's your choice to be pregnant but not your choice to walk that far from/to the car park and if it's meant to be rotated this should be in your risk assesment and action taken on the fact that it is a long walk for a heavily pregnant lady. if you get no joy on a risk assesment then check with citizens advice but they have to give you a risk assesment by law and do whatever needs to be done to keep you and baby safe. your boss seems to be on your side about it so hopefully it will be stress free for you!

Thats terrible! I cannot believe the that a company could take such an approach to being pregnant! I'm sure if you were to have your risk assessment they would have to do something about this. Personally I cannot even walk round the supermarket at 24 wks pregnant due to pelvic pain so to have to walk an hour to work each day would surely put me off work on the sick! Which would they rather have? I would discuss it further with HR and put your point across, employers have to ensure the safety and wellbeing of their pregnant staff and unborn child and shouldnt be jeopordising this in any way.  Good Luck and all the best, Lou x
