High Risk of Downs - Amniocentisis???

I've just had the news that I am in high risk category for having a baby with downs syndrome.  My head is all over the place at the minute but I've been asked to go to hospital tomorrow to discuss results and to have an amniocentisis if I want to.  Has anyone ever been high risk before or had amniocentisis? I'm so worried and have no idea what to expect - I had a miscarriage earlier in the year so this is extra hard as I know this test could cause me to miscarry.  Any advice would be appreciated.  Julie

Im 41 and just got my results today im low risk and never in a million years did i expect to get those results but i work with someone whose wife was 37 when she was pregnant she was high risk and had the amnio.  She has a fabulous healthy little girl who is full of character. the doctors say that there is only 1% chance in a100 having a miscarriage.  I was expecting to be in a high risk and expected a call today saying when can i go in as there was no doubt in my mind to have it but i found it a very scary experience just waiting for the result.  What ever you decide good luck and i hope is all worry for nothing i know my mind was put at ease because of my work colleague.

Hi,

I'm 38 and pregnant with baby number 3, and have actually requested an amnio.  I gathered that my blood test risk would come back as medium/high risk anyway, so might as well get it over and done with.

I've got to go for a counselling session next week where I can ask questions etc, and they'll make the appointment for me, which won't be too far away as I'm over 13 weeks now.

Checked on various websites about amnios, and most women say it's uncomfortable but not painful - hope they're right!!

Paula.

Hi Paula, thought I'd let you know I went ahead and had the amnio and it wasn't painful, just abit strange when the needle goes in but nothing to worry about.  My results came back all clear so I'm pleased I went ahead with it as its put my mind at rest!  Good luck. Julie.
